"As good luck would have it," you have stumbled upon a website
that brings yesterday’s issues into contemporary focus.
We, the LA Subway Shakespeare Project, are the only African-American theater company in the country doing what we do - Shakespeare scenes outside Los Angeles’s METRO stations, or in the METRO parking lots, and sometimes on the trains all over the city of Los Angeles and LA County.
LASSP currently has 21 episodes streaming on UKWMedia & Urbn-TV on RokuTV. The major point of our Company is that LASSP is for kids and families who don’t have the means but want to experience theater, where moms or dads can walk their kids to a local METRO station and expose their children to working actors performing Shakespeare.
We don't seek out Shakespearean actors or classically trained actors, but we must have good actors! If we’re lucky enough to audition actors who speak with a British accent, then we like that too, but we’re not obsessed about it. However, you will recognize notable contemporary actors, such as Guy Killum, who appeared in many television shows and Oscar-winner Spike Lee's “School Daze". He is featured in three LASSP episodes.
Two LASSP episodes feature the late, great and brilliant poet/actor Lynn Manning who was also a co-founder of Watts Village Theater Company. And as wonderful as Lynn was to watch as Othello – even though Lynn was born to play Othello – we had plans of having him in several more episodes as other major Shakespeare characters. He is missed in the Company.
Shakespeare’s themes are global. Every age and nationality can relate to love, jealousy, the mystical, and hope, that can “forever and a day” make you laugh or cry. We quote Shakespeare daily, noticeable upon seeing LASSP’s performances, which have also been recognized and sanctioned as authentic by the Royal Shakespeare Academy
